Welcome back to this week’s blog!
This week in Close Reading we are comparing and contrasting with the two text ‘’Cesca’s Reward’’ and ‘’Roy’s Secret’’. Cesca’s Reward is about a girl named Cesca that lived in Italy and her dad owns a gondola to make money. Roy's Secret is about a boy named Roy that keeps a secret from Mr.Banner (his boss) and mom because he is supposed to be cleaning, but instead he is reading his favorite fairy tale books.
In our class we did 2 Socratic Seminars to compare and contrast Cesca and Roy. Our discussion questions were: How would Cesca’s life be different if her baby brother was never born? And for Roy we talked about, How would Roy’s life be different if his mother wouldn’t have taken in all the foster children. During our discussion we talked about how Cesca’s life would be different because she wouldn’t have all those chores so then she wouldn’t work hard to earn a reward of a gondola ride with her dad. And Roy’s life would be different too because he wouldn't have all of those chores making him late for his job at Mr. Banner's book shop. Both characters would have very different lives if they didn't have younger brothers and sisters who made them into the people they are today.
Our 2nd Socratic Seminar will be on Thursday and we will talk about the question, How would the story "Roy's Secret" be different if it were told from Mr. Banner's point of view? I can't give you more details about this because we will do this discussion tomorrow, but I will let you know in my next blog.
Here is what I asked my classmates: Who would you rather go visit Roy or Cesca? and Why?
Tabata said ’’I will go meet Roy because he likes to read books and I like to read books and he looks like a nice caring guy."
Daisy said "Cesca because I can sit in a the gondola with her and that's fun! And where Cesca lives looks beautiful so I want to see it too."
See you in 2019!!
