In Writing we are working with new texts called “ Excerpt Baby Mammoth Mummy”, in the text it talks about when there is a character named Yuri and his son found a Mammoth in the Sand. It also says that Yuri wanted to trade the baby mammoth mummy. We also did a other text called “Excerpt From Discovering the Inca Maiden:My Adventures on Ampato.”
Here is one of the short responses for this text, According to “Excerpt From Discovering the Inca Maiden:My Adventures on Ampato”, why is the discovery of the mummy significant? Use Details from the article to support your response.
The First thing that I did was right of what “Significant” means, what significant means is something important. My whole class did a Multi-Flow Map so we can solve the response. The first thing that we did was we annotate the question and cross some of the word so we know what to put as our restate. When we put our restate, we went back to the text to look for details so we can find out our answer. When we found out our answer, and details we made an inference. An inference is where we use our details and restate and answer as one sentence. When we finished our map we started to make our RADDEI which is restate, answer, detail, detail, explain, and inference. Also, there may not be a explanation in the map but we can make a explanation on a short response to make our RADDEI more sense.
Until next week,
We are going to be talking about 2 text’s called “Excerpt The Most Beautiful Place In The World” and “ Excerpt From Seeker”.
If you want to know about “Excerpt From The Most Beautiful Place In The World”, then it’s about a character named Juan who is a boy who lives with his Grandmother in Guatemala. Juan is so smart that he is going to pass first grade after 2 months so he can go straight to second grade. Juan is showing he is Intelligent. If you want to know the text “Excerpt From Seeker," it’s about a 16 year old boy who wants to be a Noble Warrior instead of a Teacher like his Father. Seeker is also intelligent because he is the top student in the school.
One difference is Juan's story is realistic fiction, but Seeker's story is science fiction.
This is one of the short responses that we answered this week, Why is the phrase “The most beautiful place in the world” important to the story? Use 2 details from the story to support your response.
I wanted to ask my classmates and all the readers,
How would you feel if you got a letter sending you to the next grade? Would you want to do it?
Write your answers in the comments so we can all read them.
See you soon,
Hello and Welcome!
I have a question for you.... What lessons have you learned from adults? This is what we are writing about this week.
This week we were writing our first extended response. This is different from a short response because for an extended response you have to write about two texts, not just one. We haven't done this yet in 5th grade, but when I took the ELA Ready I felt so nervous to write it because its hard to find details for two texts. When we were going over how to do it in class, it made me feel relieved to learn how.
So the steps for a extended response are planning, Drafting, editing, revising, and publishing. The first step was we had to plan. What we had to do first was look in 2 text called “Cesca’s Reward” and “Roy’s Secret”, we started with 2 circle maps to find all the lessons Cesca and Roy learn from adults. Then we choose one lesson for each text.
So then we made flow maps that has the introduction, 2 body paragraphs (one for each text), and our conclusion. When we finished doing our flow maps for homework if we didn't finish in class.
The next step was drafting. When we started to draft we had to skip lines so when we revise, we can fix the errors we made. We had to write all of the information that we had in our flow map. When we were done drafting we had to do the next step, “Revising”. When we are revising we have to do it with a partner. So how it works is that we revise our partners draft and our partner revises our draft. We have to revise with a color pencil, we can’t use the color pencils like, yellow, white, and brown because those colors are too light to see. We need to have 2 colors one color for our own revision and a different color for our partners revisions.
When we are done revising then we have to do our polish draft. The only way that we can do the polish draft is if our teacher says that our draft is good, which means no errors. In our polish draft we can’t skip lines. When were done doing our polish draft then the next step is publishing. When we start to publish we type in a computer. When were done typing, then we we show to our teacher.
Finally, We have to get are maps, writing rubric, the publish draft, polish draft, and our draft that we revised, so then we stapled them in order and we are done!
When we get back from the winter break, we will start a new writing with 2 new texts.
See you in January!
This week were going to read two texts, one called “Young Man and the Sea” which was a boy who sailed around the world all by himself. We used this text to practice using the 2-point rubric. We had to read a person’s response and use the rubric to score it and see what is missing. Then the next day, we were changing the response to make it a strong 2.
Last week when we published our writing pieces on ecosystems. So this week we began our next unit which is response to text. That means we read a text and write about it.
The first text we read for this unit is called Cesca’s Reward. It is about a girl named Cesca who lives in Italy a long time ago and her father has an old gondola. Cesca wanted her dad to have a new gondola because the old gondola was too old, so her father was saving money and he buys a new one.
Then she gets a new brother and now she has to work for help in the house by being taught to clean the brasses on the boat. She does a good job and then her father becomes proud of her so he lets her have a ride on the gondola for whole day and she has a good time.
We answered the question, "How does Cesca's father feel about his daughter."
Hello and my name is Michael. I am in class 505. I am a writing blogger. This my first time ever writing for a blog, but I’m excited to see what my classmates think about the subject of writing.
This month we are writing a report on 5 different ecosystems. They are forest, desert, coral reefs, tundra, and rainforest. We have to describe the ecosystem, write about the negative impacts humans are having on the ecosystem, and finally explain some ways we can help to save the ecosystem.
So far we have researched by writing our own research questions. Then we found the answers by reading article online and we also had one article printed out with photos that we could highlight and annotate. Then we drafted our 3 body paragraphs, being sure they all make sense and include a topic sentence. Then on Tuesday, we wrote our Introduction paragraph and today we wrote our conclusion paragraph. Next, we will edit and revise.
I spoke to my classmates and asked them some questions. Here are their answers.
Q: What process of Writing do you like best? ( Introduction, Body Paragraph, and Conclusion)
Kevin C: My favorite is writing the Introduction because I like to introduce my topic to the reader.
Henry: My favorite is writing the Body Paragraphs because we get to research it and find the different information.
Stay tuned for my blog next week!
