Hello and Welcome!
I have a question for you.... What lessons have you learned from adults? This is what we are writing about this week.
This week we were writing our first extended response. This is different from a short response because for an extended response you have to write about two texts, not just one. We haven't done this yet in 5th grade, but when I took the ELA Ready I felt so nervous to write it because its hard to find details for two texts. When we were going over how to do it in class, it made me feel relieved to learn how.
So the steps for a extended response are planning, Drafting, editing, revising, and publishing. The first step was we had to plan. What we had to do first was look in 2 text called “Cesca’s Reward” and “Roy’s Secret”, we started with 2 circle maps to find all the lessons Cesca and Roy learn from adults. Then we choose one lesson for each text.
So then we made flow maps that has the introduction, 2 body paragraphs (one for each text), and our conclusion. When we finished doing our flow maps for homework if we didn't finish in class.
The next step was drafting. When we started to draft we had to skip lines so when we revise, we can fix the errors we made. We had to write all of the information that we had in our flow map. When we were done drafting we had to do the next step, “Revising”. When we are revising we have to do it with a partner. So how it works is that we revise our partners draft and our partner revises our draft. We have to revise with a color pencil, we can’t use the color pencils like, yellow, white, and brown because those colors are too light to see. We need to have 2 colors one color for our own revision and a different color for our partners revisions.
When we are done revising then we have to do our polish draft. The only way that we can do the polish draft is if our teacher says that our draft is good, which means no errors. In our polish draft we can’t skip lines. When were done doing our polish draft then the next step is publishing. When we start to publish we type in a computer. When were done typing, then we we show to our teacher.
Finally, We have to get are maps, writing rubric, the publish draft, polish draft, and our draft that we revised, so then we stapled them in order and we are done!
When we get back from the winter break, we will start a new writing with 2 new texts.
